Important Info About the Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA)

Important Info About the Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA)Important Info About the Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA)TheFamily and Medical Leave Act(FMLA) is a federal law that can be of assistance if youneed to take time off from work because of family responsibilities. Enacted in 1993, FMLA requires certain companies to provide employees unpaid leave for issues related to family (such as caring for a newborn or adopted child) or health issues (your own or a family members). However, not all employers need to adhere to FMLA, and not all employees are eligible. Your company might even provideadditional benefits, like paidmaternity leave, or you may be eligiblefor disability insurance. Some organizations will offer more liberal leave policies in order to attract and retain talent especially in industries where there is a shortage of qualified workers and during tight labor markets. Therefore, the first step in learning about eligibility for coverage is to ask your employer what FML A benefits are provided to employees. If your manager isnt aware of FMLA guidelines, check with the human resources department directly. What FMLA Covers Employers with more than 50 workers must provide eligible employees up to 12 workweeksof unpaid FMLAleave during any 12-month period. These 12 work weeks do not need to be consecutive. In addition, the employer must give the employee his or her job back after the leave or offer them another position with equivalent pay and benefits. During this period, the employee still has the health insurance benefits provided by the company. Whos Eligible for FMLA An FMLA-eligible employee is an employee who has worked for their employer at least 12 months, has worked at least 1,250 hours over the past 12 months, and works at a location where the company employs 50 or more workers within 75 miles. Under FMLA, covered employers must grant unpaid leave during any 12-month period for one or more of the following reasons For the birth and c are of a newborn child of the employeeFor care for an adopted child or child in foster careTo care for an immediate family member (spouse, child, or parent) with a serious health conditionTo take medical leave when the employee is unable to work because of a serious health conditionTo deal with emergencies related to a family members active military duty FMLA applies to both mothers and fathers, including same-sex spouses. Military FMLA The National Defense Authorization Actextends coverageto employees with spouses, children, or parents who now are serving on, or have been called up for, active duty in the military. These emergencies might include the following Childcare for the child of a deployed military memberAttending certain military briefings or ceremoniesMaking financial or legal arrangements related to the military members absence If the military member becomes seriously ill or injured while on active duty, coverage may be extended up to 26 weeks of unpaid leave each ye ar. State Family Leave Legislation California has implemented a Paid Family Leave (PFL) insurance program, which when taken in conjunction with FMLA and California Family Rights Act (CFRA) leave, provides up to six weeks paid leave. New York also has a paid medical leave program that provides 10 weeks of paid leave at 55% of the statewide average weekly wage (AWW) in 2019. Additional coverage up to 12 weeks and 67% of the AWW will be phased in by 2021. New Jersey, Rhode Island, DC (2020) and the state of Washington (2020) also have or will implement paid leave programs. Other states also have or will soon have programs that provide expanded coverage including acceptable reasons for leave, length of leaves and compensation, so investigate the benefits available in your location. How to Tell Your Manager Before talking to your supervisor and human resources department about wanting to take FMLA leave, see if your employers qualify for FMLA leave. Check with your companys human resources office. Also, find out if your company provides other benefits related to your situation, such as maternity or paternity leave or disability insurance. When you need to take FMLA leave, speak with your employer as soon as possible. You are required to provide 30-days advance notice in writing when the need is foreseeable. For example, if you know you are adopting a child and will need to take leave, it is typical that you will know at least that far in advance. However, if you are unable to tell your manager ahead of time, provide as much notice as possible. If possible, reassure your employer that you are very motivated to return from your leave to resume your duties. Mention your willingness to train staff and any ideas you have to ease the transition. Where to Find mora Information For more information, or if you have questions on the FMLA, review the U.S. Department of Labors Family and Medical Leave Act overview, information for employers and employees, guideline s, and forms. Understanding a CAM (Common Area Maintenance) Fee

Understanding a CAM (Common Area Maintenance) FeeUnderstanding a CAM (Common Area Maintenance) FeeIts important to understand exactly what youre paying for when you sign any commercial lease. Common area maintenance fees(CAM fees) are fairly common in commercial leases, but their terms can vary considerably. Be sure to ask questions about whats included in all fees that are padded into rent under the terms of your lease, and find out how those fees might increase each year. Some leases might cap rent increases to a reasonable percentage, but CAM fees might go up at a different percentage rate. Knowing what youllbe responsible for paying during each year of your lease will help you make better long-term decisions about whether a particular space will still be affordable in subsequent years, even if it seems like a good fit now. What Is CAM? Manycommercial real estateleases require that the tenant or lessee pay a portion of CAM fees. There are two basic calculations for CAM fees v ariable CAM fees,in which the amount a tenant is required to contribute increases based on a number of factors, and flat CAM fees, where the fees are a fixed amount. The term is typically used in conjunction with the bestandgabe of retail and industrial spaces. You might also hear CAM fees referred to as a load factor when theyre combined with other fees. What Do CAM Fees Cover? CAM feesvary considerably and cover a wide range of expenses that landlords mustpay to keep the premises up and running. They might include repairs, insurance, property maintenance, and sometimes even the salaries of administrative staff when those employees contribute to running a business park. These salaries might be tagged as administrative fees. How Are CAM Fees Calculated? CAM expenses are typically calculated on a pro-rata basis. In simplest terms, the moreleasedsquare footage a tenant has, the greater the percentage of CAM expenses hell pay. Fees correspond with how much of the buildings tota l square footage youre leasing, whether it be 10 percent or 50 percent. If you occupy 50 percent of the premises, the landlords expenses run $4,000 a month, and your CAM fees are variable, you can expect to pay $2,000 a month or half the overall expenses. It can be a very significant add-on. Is This Legal? The concept of CAM fees is typically legal, but remember that terms can differ a great deal from one lease to the next. The practice isnt widely accepted and embraced by industry professionals for this reason. You need to understand exactly what costs youll be contributing to, and youll want to ask for an itemization of those costs in writing. Make sure they stay within the lines of legality and consult an attorney whos well versed in commercial real estate law if you have any doubts. No blanket CAM definition specifies which costs can be included and which cannot. The frequency of payments can be an issue as well. CAM fees can be complicated and expensive, so its always advi sable to have an attorney review any lease that includes CAM requirements or anyother special fee, even if youre pretty sure you understand the terms.

This is why top performers ultimately become bad bosses

This is why top performers ultimately become bad bossesThis is why top performers ultimately become bad bossesWeve all heard the cautionary tales of good workers becoming bad bosses. We watch top performers suddenly struggle to lead a team, wondering what happened. We learn from watching newly promoted managers flounder that the skills of your initial job do not necessarily translate to your promoted job. This is a theory thats been circulating since the 1960s. In 1969,Canadian educator Laurence J. Peter co-authored a satirical book, The Peter Principle Why Things Always Go Wrong detailing a harsh truth Good rule-followers get promoted by management until they become bad leaders. As Peter wryly puts it, In a hierarchy, every employee tends to rise to his level of incompetence. Although the business examples within the book were fake, the satire of managerial incompetence struck a chord with workers everywhere, topping bestseller lists. Now theres data to prove it.Researchers Good job wertzuwachs does not correlate with good management skillsResearchers from Minneapolis, MIT and Yale University decided to put the question posed by the Peter Principle to the test Do the best workers become the worst managers? In a new paper published in the National Bureau of Economic Research, they lay outevidence to support the Peter Principle.Looking at the performance of sale workers at 214 firms, they found that firms would prioritize current job performance in promotion decisions at the expense of other observable characteristics that better predict managerial performance. Sales workers increased their chances of earning a promotion by about 14% each time they doubled their schlussverkauf. But just because someone is great at closing deals doesnt mean they are fit to lead a team.Researchers found that workers who were the best at sales had a lower success rate with getting their team to meet sales goals when they got promoted to management. In fact, sales declined an average of 7.5% on teams led by managers who had doubled sales when they were just in charge of themselves.Team players show better leadershipThe study challenges us to look beyond certain numbers when defining top performance. The independence and autonomy skills you excelled in as worker do not necessarily help you collaborate with a team. Newly promoted managers who were not stars at increasing sales numbers ended up becoming good managers when they were great at collaboration - a skill overlooked in promotion decisions. Employees who excelled at sales collaboration, or the number of colleagues with whom a worker shared credit on transactions ended up being great managers who increased sales by 30% for their teams. To find good managers in a sea of hard workers, companies need to restructure what good performance actually looks like, so that skills like collaboration get rewarded. The costs of not promoting the best potential managers are high, the study warns. Firms appear willing to forg o a 30% improvement in subordinate performance to achieve better incentives or to avoid costly politicking.

Textbooks and Ancillaries

Textbooks and AncillariesTextbooks and AncillariesTextbooks accompany a specific class or subject at primary, middle, high school, or university level and suggest a curriculum for that particular subject. Although textbooks have traditionally been in print form, much of the textbook market is making a shift towards digital books, like a lot of publishing these days. School Textbooks Vs. Higher Education Textbooks The textbook market differentiates between school textbooks meant for elementary schools or high schools and higher education textbooks meant for colleges or other post-secondary schools. In fruchtwein cases, the choice of elementary school subject textbooks and high school subject textbooks are agreed upon and purchased in bulk by an entire school or school system for use and re-use in the classroom, where they remain after purchase. Higher education textbooks, meanwhile, are fruchtwein often chosen or adopted for a particular course by the professor or instructor for t he course. The schools bookstore then makes the textbook available for individual purchase by the students taking the course. Reseller and Rental Challenges After a class is complete, some students choose to sell their books either to a reseller that specializes in used college textbooks or offering them up themselves online in an effort to recoup some of their expenses. As a result, the used textbook market is quite robust, which has impacted the higher education publishing marketplace. When a used book is sold, the original publisher sees no profit. In the past, these publishers have taken practical measures to counteract the effect of the used market, like making cursory updates to textbooks or simply changing the cover and then labeling the book as a different edition. Ultimately, this compels students to pick up the latest copy to ensure they are using the most updated edition for their studies. Adapting to the used market is just one of the challenges that have faced publi shers. There is also a rental market to contend with sites that offer book rentals to students. This is obviously a more cost-effective option for students but it likewise doesnt generate any new revenue for the original publisher. Digital Publishing Changes and Challenges For all the inherent challenges the online world has presented publishers on the retail side of things, the move toward digital publishing has created new tools that make reselling less of a threat. Like many software packages available, publishers can assign licenses for their digital products so that only a single user can use it. It also offers greater flexibility from a content perspective. While the print counterpart is static, digital publishing is dynamic. Updates can be made in real time without having to undertake an added expense of printing a new edition. As a result, the content is fresh and timely versus traditional print copies. Digital versions are also more appealing to tech-savvy students who grew up in the internet age with smartphones and tablets. Teaching Tool Ancillaries Digital production can also complement print production and give publishers a way to add value to their existing products, such as producing ancillary materials- for example, teaching tools like teachers manuals, presentation slides to aid instructors, student workbooks and online study guides, and more. Depending on the nature of the ancillaries, they may be sold separately or made available with a textbook purchase. Ancillaries are hugely important to textbook sales. The school textbook committees or academic professors in charge of textbook adoptions for a particular course will give much consideration to the quality of the ancillary materials when making a determination of what textbook to use.

How to Evaluate Offers for Your First Job After College

How to Evaluate Offers for Your First Job After College How to Evaluate Offers for Your First Job After College Youve got a job offer for your first job after college - now what? Should you take it, or should you hold off for a better opportunity? College graduates typically expend an enormous amount of energy on their search for a post-graduation job. When offers start to come in, it can be challenging to change gear from self-promotion to careful consideration of  job offers. Its natural to be flattered by the attention of any employer making an offer, but it is essential to carefully evaluate offers based on their merits. 10 Tips to Help  You  Evaluate Your First Job Offer After College Here are 10 tips to help you assess offers for your first job after finishing  college. 1. Decide Your Good Job Criteria Develop multifaceted, personal criteria for a good job so you have a filter  to  apply when  evaluating offers. Common factors are how well the job content corresponds to your interests/skills, the initial level of responsibility, prospects for advancement, training opportunities, salary, benefits, location, quality of potential supervision and organizational leadership, growth potential for that industry, corporate culture, and corporate ethics/social responsibility. Decide how important various factors are to you, what  type of employer would match your criteria, and what  job would best  suit  you  at this first stage of your career. Be aware of red flags that  may indicate the job could be a nightmare  instead of a good first step in your career. 2. Be Clear About Your Role Make sure you understand what you will actually be doing in your first job. Go beyond the descriptions in corporate literature. Ask your prospective employer for the opportunity to speak with recent hires in similar jobs and ask questions like  these: Walk me through how you spent your day yesterday?Which skills are most critical to carrying out your job? What are the most stressful aspects of your job? What is the most responsible activity associated with your job? When did you first get to take on more responsibility? What percentage of your time was spent on the routine tasks that you mentioned? If youre still unsure about the job content or work environment, ask whether you could shadow one of last years hires for a day or two. 3. Consider Your Career Path Assess the pattern for advancement at your prospective employer. Find out common career paths evolving from your initial position. Ask to speak with staff who have progressed to next-level positions and determine what it took for them to make that progression. Ask recruiters and corporate managers for the typical percentage of new employees who are promoted and find out the normal time frame for advancement. 4. Check Out Training and Development Opportunities Investigate opportunities for training and professional development. Is training formal or on the job? Can you receive reimbursement for taking outside courses or seminars? Are new hires encouraged to join professional organizations and funded for travel to conferences? 5. Does  the the Pay  Equate  to What Youre Worth? Analyze your salary offer within the context of that type of position and industry. Connect with your college career office, where staff will have access to survey data about entry-level salaries. Request a list of alumni contacts in your target field and ask them whether your salary offer is competitive. Consult  online salary resources,  including Salary.com, PayScale.com, and Glassdoor. Recognize that starting salaries are normally higher in larger cities and bigger organizations. Assess the growth potential for your salary by asking about the timing of your reviews, eligibility for salary increases, average salary increases, and salary ranges for next-level positions. 6. Consider  the Non-Salary Compensation Determine the value of the  non-salary elements of total compensation, such  as healthcare benefits, profit sharing, and employer contributions to 401k plans. Ask how much of the healthcare premium is paid by the employee. Find out about co-pays and deductibles. Speak with college alumni in Human Resources and ask them to help you evaluate the plan. Heres  how to compare employer benefits packages. 7. What  Will  You Learn? Carefully consider how much you will learn in that first job since most new hires will change jobs many times within the first 10 years of their career. The skills and knowledge that you acquire will help you to access subsequent jobs and generate a higher income later on. Ask early career staff from the firm about the skills they have developed and the  knowledge they have acquired 8. Location, Location, Location Take a sophisticated view on how you weigh the importance of your initial job location. If the job looks great and the location is less than ideal, consider whether you might be able to transfer easily within the company or industry to a more desirable location after a couple of years. Would you be able to easily travel on weekends to your first-choice location to socialize with friends, family, or a significant other? In  any  case,  you will be very busy during the week with most new jobs. 9. Think About the Future Assess the prospects for your target employer. Is the organization growing, stable, or shrinking? Is the industry growing or fading in significance? Advancement prospects will usually be better at a growing company, and it will generally be easier to find another job if the industry is expanding. Ask alumni in the industry about trends and about  whether they would target that industry if they were starting their career again. Consult library resources about trends at the organization and within the industry. When youre deciding on which job to accept,  keep in mind that most likely  you wont stay at your first job for more than three  to  five years. 10. How About Management Style? Carefully evaluate the leadership style and personality of your prospective first supervisor (if you  know  who  it  is). Ask people who report to him/her open-ended questions like  these: How would you describe his/her approach to management or leadership style? What do you enjoy most about working for him/her?What mechanisms exist for providing feedback? If alumni work at the organization you might ask some more direct questions about your prospective bosss reputation. Taking the time to  conduct a thorough evaluation of your job offers  will make it more likely that you will select the right employment situation to launch your career.

How to Ask Your Boss for a Promotion at Work - The Muse

How to Ask Your Boss for a Promotion at Work - The Muse How to Ask Your Boss for a Promotion at Work Asking for a promotion ranks high on the list of life’s most anxiety-inducing activities. Putting yourself out there to higher-ups can be intimidating, and competition can be fierce, especially in the current economic climate. And, of course, what if they say no? But- it’s also one of the most important things you can do for your career. If you want to move forward in your company or field, promotions are part of the game, and they won’t just be handed to you- you have to work (and ask!) for them. Ready to take that next step? Here’s what to know before the big conversation 1. Do Your Homework The most important part of asking for a promotion is preparing ahead of time. When you make the ask, you’ll need to prove (with specifics) that you’re ready for the next step. First, you’ll want to emphasize to your manager what you’ve brought to the table so far- it’s a good measure of both your contributions and your future potential. Make a list of all of your accomplishments to use as your talking points. Have you taken on a side project that grew into a new revenue stream? Doubled your sales goals in less than six months? Doing a great job in your position isn’t enough to make your case- you’ll need to show that you’ve gone above and beyond. Next, identify the specific position you want, and why you’re ready to take it on. If you’re asking to become assistant manager, know what that entails and then demonstrate that you’ll be able to fulfill the position. Want to be a team leader? Give examples of how you’ve successfully managed smaller projects or groups of people, like coordinating your department’s internship program. Find concrete examples that prove that you’re the right person for the job 2. Plan the Timing There’s no “perfect” time to ask for a promotion, but some times are definitely better than others. The most straightforward time to ask is your annual (or semi-annual) review- it’s a built-in opportunity for both you and your manager to discuss how you’ve been doing and where your career is headed. (Just be sure that you’re not asking for a promotion solely because you’re up for review- you still need to demonstrate that you deserve the bump.) Also consider your position in the company and what’s going on within your department or team. Are people around you leaving or moving up the ranks? Is your department merging with another, or repositioning itself within the company? When there’s a lot of overall change going on, it presents a great opportunity to step up and ask your boss where she sees you fitting in as the organization moves forward. Finally, don’t be scared off by the dismal economy. Even in these tough times, smart employers understand that their employees are one of their most valuable assets, and they’ll want to retain (and reward) the best of them. You might get a smaller salary bump than people did in years past, but a promotion isn’t just about the money: It’s also about increased responsibilities, and hopefully you’ll be fiscally rewarded when the economy starts to turn around, even if you aren’t now. 3. Ask for the Meeting If you decide to ask for a promotion when it’s not annual review time, plan ahead before you approach your manager. Send an email requesting a meeting, and make it clear that you’d like to discuss your performance and potential. You don’t want to show up to a meeting and catch your manager off guard- by giving her advance notice, she’ll have time to reflect on your performance and what the company will be able to offer you, position- and raise-wise 4. Know Your Numbers One of the biggest career mistakes women make is not negotiating their salary. According to a 2008 Carnegie Mellon study, men are four times more likely to negotiate a first salary than women, and 2.5 times more women than men said they feel “a great deal of apprehension” about negotiation. That’s not a good thing! You shouldn’t discuss numbers until you’ve actually been offered a promotion, but you should be prepared to have the conversation if it arises. So, do your research and know what you’re worth, both within the company and outside of it. Check out PayScale and Salary.com, and see if you can find out the norms for your industry and company, too. Then, when negotiation talks begin, don’t sell yourself short- it doesn’t hurt to ask for too much. That’s the nature of the negotiating game: they can always offer you less than what you ask for, but they’ll never offer you more. 5. Follow Up If you get the promotion, great! Go out and celebrate- you deserve it! But if not, know that it’s not the end of the world, and more importantly, don’t just close the conversation just yet. Make sure you leave the meeting with an idea of what will happen down the road. If now is not a good time for the department to be offering promotions, ask your boss when you can revisit the conversation. If he or she said no based on your current qualifications, get feedback on steps you can take to gain experience and be considered for a promotion in the future. Above all, know that if you’re in the right position, your manager will be glad that you’re looking to advance. Nobody ever gets fired for asking for a promotion (trust me!). But if you don’t ask, you’re only hurting yourself.

12 lessons you learn or end up regretting forever

12 lessons you learn or end up regretting forever 12 lessons you learn or end up regretting forever Sticking your neck out and taking charge of your career is no trivial matter. Whether that’s switching careers, going back to school, or walking away from a j-o-b to start your own business, it takes a lot of guts. But guts will only get you so far. Once you build up the nerve and make the leap, you’re no more than 5% of the way there. You still have to succeed in your new endeavor, and trying to succeed is when your worst fears (the ones that made you hesitate in the first place) will come true.Follow Ladders on Flipboard!Follow Ladders’ magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and more!I’m going to assume you’re like me and don’t have a brilliant mentor, a rich uncle, or some other person who is going to show you the ropes and explain each step you need to take to take charge of your career. You see, it’s been almost 20 years since I last had a boss. I went from working in a surf shop to striking out on my own, eventually starting  TalentSmart  (with a partner) before I’d finished grad school. When I set out on my own, I had all the gumption and appetite for risk that I needed to take charge of my career. At the time I thought that was all I needed to succeed. It wasn’t. I also needed guidance. Without it, I learned some difficult (and often painful) lessons along the way.I’d like to share some of my biggest lessons learned with you so that they can help you as you take charge of your career (in whatever form that takes). As I look back on these lessons, I realize that they’re really great reminders for us all.1. Confidence must come firstSuccessful people often exude confidence - it’s obvious that they believe in themselves and what they’re doing. It isn’t their success that makes them confident, however. The confidence was there first.Think about it: Doubt breeds doubt. Why would anyone believe in you, your ideas, or your abilities if you didn’t believe in them yourself? It takes confidence to reach for new challenges.  People who are fearful or insecure tend to stay within their comfort zones. But comfort zones rarely expand on their own. That’s why people who lack confidence get stuck in dead-end jobs and let valuable opportunities pass them by. Unconfident people often feel at the mercy of external circumstances.Successful people aren’t deterred by obstacles, which is how they rise up in the first place. Confidence is a crucial building block in a successful career, and embracing it fully will take you places you never thought possible. No one is stopping you from what you want to accomplish but yourself. It’s time to remove any barriers created by self-doubt.2. You’re living the life that you’ve createdYou are not a victim of circumstance. No one can force you to make decisions and take actions that run contrary to your values and aspirations. The circumstances you’re living in today are your own - you created them.Likewise, your future is entirely up to you. If you’re feeling stuck, it’s probably because you’re afraid to take the risks necessary to achieve your goals and live your dreams. When it’s time to take action, remember that it’s always better to be at the bottom of the ladder you want to climb than at the top of one you don’t.3. Being busy does not equal being productiveLook at everyone around you. They all seem so busy - running from meeting to meetin g and firing off emails. Yet how many of them are really producing, really succeeding at a high level?Success doesn’t come from movement and activity. It comes from focus - from ensuring that your time is used efficiently and productively. You get the same number of hours in the day as everyone else. Use yours wisely. After all, you’re the product of your output, not your effort. Make certain your efforts are dedicated to tasks that get results.4. You’re only as good as those you associate withYou should strive to surround yourself with people who inspire you, people who make you want to be better. And you probably do. But what about the people who drag you down? Why do you allow them to be a part of your life?Anyone who makes you feel worthless, anxious, or uninspired is wasting your time and, quite possibly, making you more like them. Life is too short to associate with people like this. Cut them loose.5. Squash your negative self-talkWhen you’re taking charge of your car eer, you won’t always have a cheerleader in your corner. This magnifies the effects of self-doubt. The more you ruminate on negative thoughts, the more power you give them. Most of our negative thoughts are just that - thoughts, not facts. When you find yourself believing the negative and pessimistic things your inner voice says, it’s time to stop and write them down. Literally stop what you’re doing and write down what you’re thinking.Once you’ve taken a moment to slow down the negative momentum of your thoughts, you will be more rational and clear-headed in evaluating their veracity.6. Avoid asking “What if?Ӊ€œWhat if?” statements throw fuel on the fire of stress and worry, which are detrimental to reaching your goals. Things can go in a million different directions, and the more time you spend worrying about the possibilities, the less time you’ll spend taking action and staying productive. Asking “what if?” will only take you to a place you don’t want - or need - to go. Of course, scenario planning is a necessary and effective planning technique. The key distinction here is to recognize the difference between worry and strategic thinking about your future.7. Schedule exercise and sleepI can’t say enough about the importance of quality sleep. When you sleep your brain removes toxic proteins from its neurons that are by-products of neural activity when you’re awake. Unfortunately, your brain can remove them adequately only while you’re asleep. So when you don’t get enough sleep, the toxic proteins remain in your brain cells, wreaking havoc by impairing your ability to think - something no amount of caffeine can fix.Your self-control, attention, and memory are all reduced when you don’t get enough - or the right kind - of sleep. Sleep deprivation raises stress hormone levels on its own, even without a stressor present, which are a major productivity killer.Ambition often makes you feel as if you must sacrifice sleep to s tay productive, but sleep deprivation diminishes your productivity so much throughout the day that you’re better off sleeping.A study conducted at the Eastern Ontario Research Institute found that people who exercised twice a week for 10 weeks felt more competent socially, academically, and athletically. They also rated their body image and self-esteem higher.Best of all, rather than the physical changes in their bodies being responsible for the uptick in confidence, it was the immediate, endorphin-fueled positivity from exercise that made all the difference. Schedule your exercise to make certain it happens, or the days will just slip away.8. Seek out small victoriesSmall victories can seem unimportant when you’re really after something big, but small victories build new androgen receptors in the areas of the brain responsible for reward and motivation. This increase in androgen receptors increases the influence of testosterone, which further increases your confidence and your e agerness to tackle future challenges. When you have a series of small victories, the boost in your confidence can last for months.9. Don’t say “yes” unless you really want toResearch conducted at the University of California in Berkeley shows that the more difficulty that you have saying no, the more likely you are to experience stress, burnout, and even depression, all of which make it difficult to take charge of your career.Saying no is indeed a major challenge for many people. “No” is a powerful word that you should not be afraid to wield. When it’s time to say no, avoid phrases like “I don’t think I can” or “I’m not certain.” Saying no to a new commitment honors your existing commitments and gives you the opportunity to successfully fulfill them.10. Don’t seek perfectionDon’t set perfection as your target. It doesn’t exist. Human beings, by our very nature, are fallible. When perfection is your goal, you’re always left with a nagging sense of failur e that makes you want to give up or reduce your effort. You end up spending your time lamenting what you failed to accomplish and what you should have done differently instead of moving forward excited about what you’ve achieved and what you will accomplish in the future.11. Focus on solutionsWhere you focus your attention determines your emotional state. When you fixate on the problems that you’re facing, you create and prolong negative emotions which hinder your ability to reach your goals. When you focus on the actions you’ll take to better yourself and your circumstances, you create a sense of personal efficacy that produces positive emotions and improves performance.12. Forgive yourselfWhen you slip up, it is critical that you forgive yourself and move on. Don’t ignore how the mistake makes you feel; just don’t wallow in it. Instead, shift your attention to what you’re going to do to improve yourself in the future.Failure can erode your self-confidence and make it ha rd to believe you’ll achieve a better outcome in the future. Most of the time, failure results from taking risks and trying to achieve something that isn’t easy.Success lies in your ability to rise in the face of failure, and you can’t do this when you’re living in the past. Anything worth achieving is going to require you to take some risks, and you can’t allow failure to stop you from believing in your ability to succeed. When you live in the past, that is exactly what happens, and your past becomes your present, preventing you from moving forward.Bringing it all togetherI hope these lessons are as useful to you as they have been to me over the years. As I write them, I’m reminded of their power and my desire to use them every day.Travis Bradberry is the coauthor of Emotional Intelligence 2.0 and the cofounder of TalentSmart. This article originally appeared on  LinkedIn.You might also enjoy… New neuroscience reveals 4 rituals that will make you happy Strangers know your social class in the first seven words you say, study finds 10 lessons from Benjamin Franklin’s daily schedule that will double your productivity The worst mistakes you can make in an interview, according to 12 CEOs 10 habits of mentally strong people

Pollen is getting worse, but you can make things better with these tips from an allergist

Pollen is getting worse, but you can make things better with these tips from an allergist Pollen is getting worse, but you can make things better with these tips from an allergist Blooming spring flowers signal the beginning of spring, but for millions of people, they also signal the onset of the misery: allergy and asthma season. Itchy, watery eyes; sneezing, runny nose; cough and wheezing are triggered by an overreaction of the body to pollen.Every spring, trees and grasses release billions of buoyant pollen granules into the air, using the wind to disburse across the countryside in an effort to reproduce. It’s all about survival; plants that release more pollen have the survival advantage.Follow Ladders on Flipboard!Follow Ladders’ magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and more!As an adult and pediatric allergist-immunologist in the Midwest, the onset of spring signals my busy season treating hundreds of patients for their seasonal allergy and asthma symptoms. If you suffer through the season, know that you are not alone. Throughout history, pollen has taken the fun out of spring for many. In modern tim es, however, medical science has identified practices and treatments that help.Older than the dinosaurs, as wide as the worldFossilized specimens of pollen granules have been found predating dinosaurs and alongside Neanderthals. And, sinus and asthma symptoms and treatments are documented throughout history and across the globe. People just didn’t know exactly how to treat the symptoms, or exactly what was causing them. For example, over 5,000 years ago, the Chinese used the berries of the horse tail plant, ma huang (Ephedra distachya), to relieve congestion and decrease mucous production associated with “plant fever” â€" a condition affecting people during the fall.In Egypt, the “Papyrus Ebers,” written around 1650 B.C., recommended over 20 treatments for cough or difficulty breathing, including honey, dates, juniper and beer.Although Homer’s “Iliad” describes the loud noise of breathing in battle as “asthma,” Aretaeus of Cappadocia of the second century A.D. is c redited with the first clinical description more consistent with modern understanding of this condition. He wrote of those who suffered that:“They open the mouth since no house is sufficient for their respiration, they breathily standing, as if desiring to draw in all the air which they possibly can inhale… the neck swells with the inflation of the breath, the precordia (chest wall) retracted, the pulse becomes small and dense,” and if the symptoms persist, the patient “may produce suffocation after the form of epilepsy.By the time Columbus landed, indigenous populations in Central and South American were utilizing ipecacuanha, a root found in Brazil with expectorant and emetic properties and balsam, which is still used in some cold remedies today. Coca and tobacco leaves, used medicinally by the Incas, were later exported to Europe for additional experimentation for the treatment of rhinitis and asthma.Aside from the “plant fever” described in China, the first written d escription of seasonal respiratory symptoms is credited to Rhazes, a Persian scholar, around 900 A.D. He described the nasal congestion that coincided with the blooming of roses, termed “rose fever.”Symptoms noticed, but no cause identifiedAs scientific advancement was stifled during the Middle Ages, in large part due to the plague, it wasn’t until 900 years later, in 1819, that Dr. John Bostock published a description of his own seasonal allergies. But he didn’t know what was causing them.Having suffered from “summer catarrh” since childhood, Bostock persisted in his study of the condition, despite an initial lackluster response from the medical community. In the nine years between his first and second publications, he found only 28 additional cases consistent with his own seasonal allergy symptoms, which perhaps demonstrates the lower prevalence of the condition at the time. He noted that nobility and the privileged classes were more often afflicted by seasonal allergie s. This was thought to be the consequence of wealth, culture and an indoor life.Societal changes with their roots in the Industrial Revolution, including increased exposure to air pollution, less time spent outdoors, increased pollen counts and improved hygiene, all likely contributed to the increased prevalence of allergies that we continue to see today. They also helped form the hygiene hypothesis, which states that in part decreased exposure to particular bacteria and infections could be leading to the increase in allergic and autoimmune diseases. The source of seasonal symptoms at the time was also thought to be caused by the smell of new hay. This led to the coining of the term “hay fever.”Bostock instead suspected the recurring symptoms were triggered by the summer heat, since his symptoms improved when he spent the summer on the coast. It would later became common for nobility and aristocrats to spend allergy season in coastal or mountain resorts to avoid bothersome sympto ms.Identifying the true culpritThrough methodical study and self-experimentation, Dr. Charles Blackley identified that pollen was to blame for allergy symptoms. He collected, identified, and described various pollens and then determined their allergic properties by rubbing them into his eyes or scratching them on his skin. He then noted which ones resulted in redness and itching. This same technique is used in skin prick testing by allergists today.Inspired by discoveries related to vaccination, Dr. Leonard Noon and John Freeman prepared doses of pollen extracts for injection in an effort to desensitize patients with allergic rhinitis in the early 1900s. This effective treatment, called allergy immunotherapy, also known as allergy shots, is still used today.Antihistamines first became available in the 1940s, but they caused significant sedation. The formulations with fewer side effects that are used today have only been available since the 1980s.Pollen counts likely to growThough re cognized by ancient civilizations, seasonal allergic rhinitis and allergic asthma have only increased in prevalence in recent history and are on the rise, now affecting 10 to 30 percent of the world’s population.Fueled by warmer temperatures and increased carbon dioxide levels, pollen seasons are longer, and pollen counts are higher. Many experts believe this will worsen in the coming years due in large part to climate changeWhat can you do? Often, those who are allergic need a multifaceted approach. Find out what allergens are causing your symptoms. Take note of when your symptoms start by making a note in a calendar or planner. Minimize exposure to allergens. Track pollen counts. When pollen counts are high, keep the windows closed at home and in the car. After spending time outdoors, shower and change clothing to prevent ongoing exposure to pollen. Take a pro-active approach to treating symptoms. Starting medications before symptoms develop can prevent symptoms from getting out of control. This can also decrease the amount of medication needed overall. Long acting non-sedating antihistamines are helpful for itching and sneezing. Nasal corticosteroid sprays are more helpful for stuffy noses. Consider a visit to see a board certified allergist/immunologist. She or he can help you determine which particular pollens maybe the source of your symptoms. Explore the role of immunotherapy with your doctor. Immunotherapy changes the immune response through administration of small regimented doses of allergens over time. This induces a state of tolerance, eventually helping people become less allergic over time. While pollen season is coming, taking a multifaceted approach can provide much needed relief from the symptoms that have plagued humankind throughout the millennia.Kara Wada, Clinical Assistant Professor, Allergy/Immunology, The Ohio State UniversityThis article is republished from The Conversation under a Creative Commons license. How to Deal With an Annoying Networking Contact - The Muse

How to Deal With an Annoying Networking Contact - The Muse How to Deal With an Annoying Networking Contact Recently, one of my co-workers was telling me about a problem she was having. She’d offered to help a former colleagues with their job search, but even after referring them to a few positions and offering suggestions for breaking into her field, they still kept bothering her for help. My guess is that they didn’t want to “pick her brain,” but rather they wanted her to just send over an offer letter at our company. My co-worker’s a considerate person, but she’s also a busy one- I know because I sit near her. So, while initially she’d been thrilled to help someone, after the fifth time they bugged her, she became annoyed. Have you experienced a similar situation? If so, you’d probably agree with me in saying that the person is really just burning a bridge. So, what do you do when someone’s constantly asking you for something and you just can’t give anymore- whether it’s because you truly don’t have the time or because you have no more to offer them? Here’s how I suggest you handle it: Be Direct The person wants something- so don’t be afraid to directly ask them what it is. Because if they continue to beat around the bush, it’ll just continue to waste more of your time. It can be as simple as saying, “I’d love to help you out, but I’m not sure what you’re looking for. What would you like from me?” Then, once you know what they want- whether it’s an introduction, a recommendation, advice, or some other favor- you can decide whether you want to (or can) give it to them. More on how to turn them down below. Politely Decline Even if you’re super close with someone, you’re allowed to say no- seriously! Remember: This person isn’t paying you to help them out. And, especially if they aren’t giving you something in return (at the very least, buying you coffee or referring you to someone they know), they don’t have a right to your time. There are numerous ways you can turn someone down and still maintain a positive relationship. This article is helpful if it was a one-time favor. These seven canned responses cover everything from opting out of an introduction to rejecting a networking meeting. And these templates can help you say no to all those emails you wish you could ignore. Cut Them Off Sometimes, you can say no, and the person just won’t listen. Or, you can punt the request to someone else and the person will still come back to you for guidance. In these situations, it’s probably in your best interest (and sanity) to stop the madness altogether. As Editor-in-Chief Jenni Maier says about professional bridges you’re allowed to burn, “[D]o her a favor and offer a little networking advice. Tell her this isn’t the best way to keep in touch, and you’d hate for her to- get ready for it- burn any bridges. While she may be embarrassed, she’ll ultimately appreciate the advice. And hopefully, leave you alone.” If bluntness doesn’t work, I give you permission to ignore or ghost them completely. Sure, it may force them never to talk to you again, but if they don’t respect and appreciate what you have done for them, they’re not worth keeping in your network. In an ideal world, networking would be a two-way street- you help someone, they help you back. But unfortunately, you’re going to come across people who expect more from you than they deserve. It may be tough to dodge their requests, but by doing so, you ultimately teach them a valuable lesson on what’s acceptable when networking. And, you free up your time to work on things that truly matter- and we could all be doing that a lot more.

10 Great Skills You Can Teach Yourself

10 Great Skills You Can Teach Yourself 10 Great Skills You Can Teach Yourself In a competitive job market, employers typically encounter many highly qualified candidates with impressive resumes and interesting backgrounds- particularly among MBA candidates. When making the tough decision between one excellent candidate and another, a hiring manager will often look for something that sets you apart- fluency in another language, for instance, or a special skill. Many of the skills that stand out to hiring managers are taught in class or learned throughout your career, but taking the initiative to teach yourself new skills is a great way to bolster your resume. You can find anything on the internet these days. Platforms like Coursera, Udemy, or edX offer a bevy of free or low-cost courses that you can take at your own pace, and there are many other websites and products dedicated to teaching specific skillsets. If you're looking for ways to bolster your resume and stand out from the crowd, here are ten great skills you can teach yourself. 1). Coding Even if you didn't pursue your MBA with the intent to pivot to a career in web development, basic coding is still an excellent skill to have- especially if you work in the digital or tech spaces. Codeacademy and The Odin Project are two great, free platforms (although Codeacademy does have a paid option) that can teach you HTML, Javascript, CSS, and a variety of other coding languages. 2.) Graphic Design Employers love to see experience in a wide variety of programs, and if even basic Photoshop skills are something you can add to your repertoire, you'll be able to demonstrate versatility and creativity. Format Magazine (a publication of Format, the portfolio-building platform) compiled a great list of 11 free online graphic design courses, which even includes a course from MIT OpenCourseWare. 3.) Content Management Systems (CMS) A content management system is a platform that manages the creation of digital content for a website. While many companies use their own in-house, proprietary CMS to host their website content, many others use services like SquareSpace or WordPress. Because every CMS is different, learning how to use one is specific to each. However, platforms like WordPress offer free or low-cost tutorials to teach you how to use them (check out WP 101 as an example). Being familiar with the features of at least one CMS puts you at an advantage when it's time to learn a new one. 4.) Microsoft Excel This seems either obvious or cliché (and it probably shouldn't go on your resume), but there is no overstating the importance of knowing at least a few handy Excel formulas. With enough formulas to fill an entire spreadsheet (there's a reason Udemy's course contains 16 hours of videos), there's virtually no limit to what you can do with Excel. Knowing your way around a workbook will make your job much easier. 5.) Search Engine Optimization (SEO) Search engine optimization is an essential component of any company's online success. SEO is essentially a multidisciplinary strategy for optimizing a website in order to appear on the first page of Google when somebody searches for a term relevant to your business. It's a booming and rapidly changing industry, and employers are always on the lookout for people who keep up with it. Moz, a leading SEO platform, has a free Beginner's Guide to SEO  and a truly insightful blog  that offers plenty of resources. 6.) Marketing Analytics Understanding how to analyze a company's performance with respect to its marketing efforts, and gleaning insights from trends, data, and user behavior is a highly impressive skill. Google Analytics, which is one of the most popular tools for measuring marketing performance, has a free online class called Analytics Academy  that can teach you the basics or help you refine your advanced skills. The Moz blog  also has an extensive analytics section. 7.) Social Media Marketing A brand's reputation and growth on social media depend on so much more than posting content. Successful social media marketing is an entire strategy that depends on following trends, analyzing data, and maintaining a relationship with your followers. Again, Moz has an extensive section on their blog devoted to this topic, and DIY Genius has a great list of 10 free online courses for social media marketing.   8.) Copywriting Being able to write professionally is absolutely essential; copywriting, however, isn't a skill that everyone has. The ability to write persuasively and with purpose, particularly for the web, is definitely a skill that might come in handy when you least expect it. Copy Hackers has an entire suite of copywriting tutorials, articles, and other resources. 9.) Stock Trading Whether you're in investment banking or stock trading, knowing how the stock market works is an invaluable tool, both personally and professionally. Investopedia, StockTrader.com, and Morningstar, Inc. all offer great information to help get you started. Your bank may also provide resources and advice.  10.) Blockchain Blockchain is the ridiculously complicated technology behind bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies, which is arguably one of today's buzziest industries. The FinTech industry, especially, is looking for people who keep up with this emerging technology. Coursera has a Blockchain Basics course, and Medium  also points to some good resources.

Issues to Resolve When You Use 360 Feedback

Issues to Resolve When You Use 360 Feedback Issues to Resolve When You Use 360 Feedback Everyone wants to know how theyre doing at work. They especially want data that tells them that theyre doing well. The challenge for managers is to provide the information in a kind, gentle, and encouraging way. The goal of a 360-degree feedback system is to give employees- including managers- a glimpse into what their coworkers think of them and their work. It can be an effective and useful component when your goal is to increase an employees development and potential to contribute, but it can be harmful to your organizations success if its used punitively or unprofessionally. How Does 360-Degree Feedback Work? The entire workplace isnt typically polled about an employee unless the business is small. More commonly, less than a dozen employees are questioned, often by completing an online form. Its not a freeform submission in most cases. It usually involves targeted questions that are ultimately rated and tabulated, although some include comments sections as well. Feedback is supposed to be confidential so it promotes openness and honesty. The 360 Degree Feedback Debate The debate over 360-degree feedback effectiveness can be a heated one. Some take the position that it should be delivered anonymously, while others are staunch proponents of face-to-face disclosures. Theres also an argument as to whether 360-degree feedback ratings should affect performance appraisal ratings and salary increases, or if they should be used solely to guide employee development. These and several other debates rage on in the performance management world.  The introduction of 360-degree feedback methods almost invariably sparks volatile discussion when the topic comes up in an organization. Proponents and opponents offer viable arguments for each point of view. Debated Approaches These are the key areas of debate about 360-degree feedback plans: The goal: It can be used as a developmental tool, or a performance appraisal tool. The method: Feedback might be filled out anonymously, given face-to-face, delivered via a coworker, or a combination of all three might be used. The personnel: Serious thought should be given to which employees will provide feedback. The outcome: This type of feedback can impact salary increases, or it might have no effect on compensation at all.Availability: The individual owns the data from 360-degree feedback, or the organization, including the manager, has access to review and use the data. The measurements typically used to determine compensation include meeting measurable goals, attendance, and contribution, not just 360 feedback. Organization Readiness Youre probably more ready for a 360-degree feedback process if your organizations climate and culture is one of trust and cooperation. Otherwise, implementing 360-degree feedback will be a lot about addressing the needs of the people. You could end up developing systems that are secretive, anonymous, and confidential. Even then, people probably wont believe that the feedback is confidential, and this will impact the data you collect. Its best to first understand your current culture, then work on your climate to create the type of organization in which 360-degree feedback will be truly valued. It can then be used for the development of the people within the organization. The Bottom Line In all cases, 360-degree feedback is most successful when its fully integrated into your work environment as a tool to support the development of people in the attainment of the organization mission, vision, and values.
